Independence Day Celebration in Yei River County

The long awaited liberation of South Sudan ended with the declaration of Independence for the new Republic of South Sudan on 9th, July 2011. In Yei River County, the celebration kicked off with colourful parades featuring various groups that included schools and civil society organizations. The climax was the lowering of the flag of the Republic of the Sudan and raising of the new flag of the Republic of South Sudan.

Commisioner Yei River County.jpgThe newly appointed Commissioner of Yei H.E. Retired Major General Alia Waiwai  was the Guest of Honor. He congratulated the South Sudanese people for having achieved independence. He remembered when the South Sudanese chiefs asked for Independence from the Khartoum government but their request fell on the deaf ears.  He said that South Sudan has to unite in order to overcome the many challenges ahead of them.

Among the invited guests was Alexander Gandu Kamandala, the Commissioner of Isiro in the Democratic Republic of Congo who represented his government. He congratulated the people of South Sudan for the great achievement and promised that DRC would work hand in hand with the Government of South Sudan to develop the new country.
Ester Akudi the Member of Parliament for South Sudan Legislative Assembly congratulated all the Heroes for their struggle for independence and urged the citizens of Yei County to respect human rights.Flag of the Republic of South Sudan being hoisted.jpg

The new Republic of South Sudan has a lot to overcome as far as economic development is concerned.  The speakers called upon all the South Sudanese to work hard in order to open great paths of development for the nation.
