The 22nd of June 2011 was a memorable day for the people of Yambio County who witnessed the opening of various Agricultural facilities presided over by the South Sudan’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry; H.E. Dr. Anne Itto Leonardo. She was accompanied by H.E Jaden Emilio Togun, the Under Secretary for Forestry, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry GoSS, Dr. George Leju Loro, the Director General for Training, Research and Extension services, MAF/GoSS, Mr.John J. Oloya, Snr. Rural Development Specialist, World Bank Juba and many other officials landed in Yambio at 11:30am. She was welcomed by government officials who included: Governor of Western Equatoria State H.E Joseph Bangasi Bakosoro, State Minister for Agriculture Charles Yoere, the Commissioner for Yambio County H.E Bakoce Angelo, Chairperson Cooperative Yambio County Mr. Bullen Nginzo, the SPLM state officials, representatives of international organizations, government officials and Yambio County communities.

In her press briefing at Yambio airstrip, Dr. Itto said, “We have achieved justice and freedom from oppression from Khartoum Government. Now we have two major issues ahead of us and that is peace and prosperity. Therefore, the battle a head of us is greater than the justice and freedom we fought for over the last 21 years. There will be no peace if people are hungry, malnourished, sick, beggars, and there will be no prosperity if all people are poor, the justice and freedom people fought for will be meaningless”.

On 23rd June 2011 Dr. Itto arrived at Rimenze Boma where AAH-I through the Emergency Food Crisis Response Project (EFCRP) supported the installation of a rice mill for the Rimenze Multipurpose Co-operative society who manage the rice mill. Dr. Itto was received by school children with welcome songs and a goat was slaughtered. The Co-operative has 38 members. It has transformed over the years and with the help of AAH-I/EFCRP, the co-operative has been training members and is in the process of completing the registration process.

The Emergency Food Crisis Response Project (EFCRP) was launched in August 2009. The aim of the project is to improve access and availability of food for consumption of 9,500 vulnerable households in Morobo and Yambio Counties.
The installed mill has a capacity of milling 1metric ton of rice per hour. Dr.Itto cut the tape and unveiled the plaque as a sign of official opening. She asked the Chairman of the cooperative to start the machine to demonstrate its capability and efficiency.

She later opened the Yambio Farmers Association store which will be used to store grains and has a capacity of 500 metric tons. The store was built by AAH-I/ EFCR Project for farmers to store their produce for collective marketing. The store will help the farmers to improve and increase their output and develop their economic stability.

Dr. Itto arrived in Ngindo boma in Yambio Town Payam and was received by the hundreds of Ngindo Boma communities. They sang songs in the local Zande Languages and carried fresh leaves that symbolized the land. She officially opened the maize flour mills in Ngindo, the first of its kind in Yambio with the capacity of producing of 600 KGs per hour.

AAH-I CAPOR’s (Capacity building for Post Conflict Reintegration) through the puppetry group which took part in mobilization and paralyzed Yambio town for two days took to the stage to encourage the farmers to increase production therefore increasing the maize mill operations. After the puppeteers performance Dr. Mogga the AAH-I Interim Country Director gave a speech summarized in one sentence: “Your Excellency, you have seen it all”.

Dr. Itto appreciated AAH-I, EFRC, CAPOR and World Bank for their hard work. She called upon AAH-I to continue with post harvest capacity building and training for the farmers to help them produce standard / quality products that can be sold to other countries in the world.

Dr. Itto was given 50 and 10 KGs sacks of maize flour; the community also sent a similar amount to H.E Salva Kiir Mayardit and H.E Commissioner of Yambio.
