The Food and Income Security (FIS) and Environment Protection is designed to enhance increased food production capacity and improvement of livelihoods for communities through promotion of better farming techniques and promotion of small scale enterprises to increase income at household level.
The programme has especially been successful in post conflict and transitional areas by working to assist communities who were largely emergency food aid dependent to attain food sufficiency through providing seeds, farming implements as well as extension services to assist in the transfer of agronomic and animal husbandry practices.
The programme is working to:
- Improve access by farmers to essential farming inputs through providing improved seed varieties, animal breeds and tools.
- Increasing income generation through promotion of agro processing enterprises and value addition
- Building technical capacity for extension services at community level
- Promoting access to markets for farmers
- Promoting environmental conservation and protection of natural resources
- Strengthening planning, management and coordination of government (where such is lacking) and community actors
